Our kidneys cater to multiple functions in the body. So it becomes our responsibility to take care of them and keep them healthy. The simplest way to keep them well and functioning is to drink plenty of water daily. ( Caution should be exercised in patients with chronic kidney and cardiac disorders). Apart from water there are a number of fruits which can help the kidneys detoxify our body. Apples, consumed whole (along with the skin) after thoroughly washing them, grapes which have a high water and potassium content, bananas which are low on sodium and protein and pomegranate all help in diuresis and thus, elimination of waste products through the kidneys.
Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus are known to lead to microangiopathy which in turn affects the kidneys over time. One needs to get a thorough checkup done at intervals to assess damage to the kidneys. Parameters like serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, serum electrolytes, screening for microalbuminuriaetc help to identify renal involvement early on. Once the kidneys are damaged, it is very difficult to restore effective cleansing functions of the body. So be aware and take due care of your pair!
